A Deep Dive Into Methodism
By: Rev'd Dr. Johnny Jeffords
Over the next several months, the Pastor’s Adult Sunday School Class will focus on Methodism during a time of great ferment in the life of the denomination, as the Church seeks to find a way forward on how it shall or shall not be fully welcoming of our LGBTQI sisters and brothers.
Beginning August 12, Johnny will lead a series on Methodism, its history and theology. We will also delve into the history of St. John’s.
Beginning September 9, we will focus on how Methodism has dealt with social issues in the past, including slavery, women’s rights and civil rights. Rev’d Dr. Michael Turner, Associate Professor of the History of Christianity and Wesleyan Studies and Director of the Methodist House of Studies at Memphis Theological Seminary, will lead us.
Beginning October 7, Johnny will lead a discussion on the plans being placed before the special session of The General Conference in February 2019. We will consider the implications of each plan on the Church writ large, and on St. John’s. From those discussions, St. John’s will be invited into a season of discernment on what it shall do and who it shall be in response to the actions to be taken by the General Conference.
As a reminder, Johnny was elected as a reserved delegate to General Conference and will be present in St. Louis in February to advocate for full inclusion.
No later than September 9, this class will relocate from the room outside the chapel to the 3rd floor of the education building in room 307.
Come share in this time of learning, discerning, and fellowship as we grow together.
