Building on Strengths: An Update on Children & Youth Ministries
Some of you have heard me say recently that Lent is one of my favorite seasons in the church calendar year. In a world run by an endless news cycle, we never seem to be able to take time to catch our breath and prepare for what comes next. The Lenten season allows us to slow down, to reflect, and to prepare for the Easter Season that awaits us.
I am using the Lenten Season to reflect and prepare for our next season in the life of Children, Youth, and Young Adult ministries here at St. John’s.
If you’ve been with us the past few Sundays for worship, you have witnessed the growth occurring in our Children’s Ministries. This past January, you participated in the Confirmation of 5 incredible youth, who join a growing youth ministry program. I want to continue to build momentum around these programs. Here are a few changes and action items that are coming up.
With the help of my amazing Children and Youth Ministry Team, we have created a survey that will be sent out in the next few weeks that will ask parents of children and youth to give feedback on our current programming and make recommendations to how we grow in our ministry areas.
Parents will receive an email that will contain a link for them to complete the survey. If your child is not yet in youth group, please answer the questions on youth. We want to hear how to best develop our program for both current and future youth. The same is for youth parents, please take time to answer the questions regarding our Children’s programming.
When I arrived at St. John’s, I inherited a youth program that was set-up to meet for Sunday School and have a once a month youth outing. One of my dreams for the youth program has always been to go to a weekly evening youth group. I am excited to announce that we will begin the preparations for a Fall 2017 kick-off for weekly evening youth group here at St. John’s! Because this is a new level of programming for St. John’s, we will use the remainder of this school year and the summer to ease into weekly programming.
On Sunday, April 23 from 5:00-7:00pm the youth group will meet at the home of Kathy and John Barker for food, fellowship, lesson, and fun.
Beginning in May, the youth group will meet on the 1st and 3rd Sundays nights of the month from 5:00-7:00pm at the Barker’s house. The schedule is below.
May 7 & 21
June 4 & 18
July 2 & 16
August 6 & 20
Vacation Bible School
This year we will be piloting a partnership for Vacation Bible School with St. Luke’s UMC. I invite you to join us from Monday, June 5 - Friday, June 9 from 9:00am-12:00pm at St. Luke’s UMC. We could use help in making VBS a success, so if you are available to volunteer, please let me know as soon as possible.
I hope that you are as excited about the future of our Children and Youth programs here at St. John’s as I am. It is an absolute honor and blessing to get to work with such amazing young people and their families on a weekly basis. Continue to be in prayer for us as we prepare for these exciting changes.
