Bruce School

Jesus said “Let the children come to me and do not hinder them; for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven”

– Matthew 19:14

Saint John’s has been a partner with Bruce Elementary through Memphis City School’s Adopt-a-School program for over 20 years. There are 508 students enrolled for the 2009-2010 school year. Historically over 88% of these students received free & reduced lunch and 20% received daily English as a Second Language instruction.

The church and school are truly neighbors. At the beginning of the school year, St. John’s hosts a breakfast for teachers, administrators, and staff. Money and school supplies are also provided. Many Bruce School students live below the poverty level and/or newly immigrated to the United States (with some children from migratory families) and arrive at Bruce without pencils, paper, or the district-mandated school uniforms children.

Throughout the year, St. John’s members tutor at Bruce. This is the most important part of the ministry. Even more tutoring assistance is needed in preparation for the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Test (TCAP). St. John’s also provides proctors for the administration of the TCAP.

At Christmas, we make the sanctuary available for the Bruce musical program and provide candy canes. Hat and gloves are given to the school counselor for those children who need them. St. John’s conducts an essay contest at the end of the school year for fourth and fifth graders. Cash prizes and certificates are awarded to the winners at a recognition banquet. At least one book is provided to each first grader as the final act of the school year.

Help us provide the tools necessary for the most vulnerable in our city, the children, to succeed in school. The most important gift is your time.
