Prayer Quilt Ministry

The St. John's Prayer Quilt ministry combines the gift of a hand-tied quilt with the gift of prayer for someone in need. Each knot tied into the quilt represents a specific prayer offered for the recipient of the quilt. The way it works is this: The Prayer Quilt Team will piece together quilts, leaving the ties that hold it together untied. Those church members or friends and family who are critically ill or in need of our prayers will be contacted by a member of the staff or a member of the church and asked if they would allow us to pray for them as part of the quilt ministry and worship service. If they agree, the quilt will be placed in the chapel. Every church member who wishes to do so will go by the chapel and offer a silent prayer for the specific person in need and tie a knot in the quilt. The completed quilt is then given to the person in need as a tangible gift representing the prayers that were offered in his or her name.

ANYONE can be on the Prayer Quilt Team – you don’t even need to know how to sew, much less how to quilt. There are jobs for everyone who feels called to help with this. We need people to cut fabric, iron, piece the fabric, etc. We also need people willing to donate fabrics or batting. Most importantly, we need people to offer silent prayers.

In addition to volunteers we really need materials such as:

  • Fabric pieces for quilt top– preferably all cotton
  • Large fabric pieces for quilt back– preferably all cotton
  • Batting Iron and ironing board
  • Fabric scissors
  • Embroidery or crochet thread
  • Plastic bins for storage of quilts and supplies
  • Measuring tapes/yardsticks
  • Rotary cutters and cutting mats
  • Quilting thread
  • Printable fabric
  • Gift cards from Hancock’s, Hobby Lobby, etc. or cash would be very much appreciated!

The Prayer Quilt Team meets at St. John's the third Tuesday of each month, from 5:15 p.m. until 7:30 p.m.
